Haggle: It’s a fact that haggling doesn’t come naturally to everyone. There might be a hundred reasons why you don’t like to haggle, you may think it’s embarrassing, or not worth the time, or maybe you just don’t know where to start.

Haggle: Haggling or bargaining is an essential part of everyday life in many countries around the world. It might not seem like it’s for you at first, but remember it’s a bit of a game, and not to be taken too seriously.

Start Your Haggle

If you can get the seller to name the price first, then come back with 50% of that as your counter offer. The selling price (which will be the combination of the cost of the item to the seller and their profit) will be somewhere in the middle of these two numbers. From here on, it’s a good and friendly battle of wills between the 2 of you. 

To Buy Or Not To Buy

You can start to haggle for an item without being obliged to buy, but it’s not a great custom to pull out if the seller meets your suggested price. If the price isn’t satisfactory, feel free to walk away, or try your luck in another shop. In fact, walking away is a useful technique. If you’re not called back by the seller, then you were probably a long way off getting a price both you and the seller were willing to settle for. A little role-play can help too: feigning hurt or shock is all part of the game. 

The Time Of Day

What time of day you choose to shop can also influence your success. For many sellers a positive transaction with the first customer of the day is seen as a lucky omen. Because of this they may take a lower price than they would once trading for the day has begun. Having said this, if you visit at the end of the trading day, sellers may be willing to offer a discount to secure one last sale for the day. 

Another Item

Consider asking for another item to be thrown in to seal the deal. Sometimes, if you’re haggle is more advanced, this may be the item you wanted all along and the original item you’re bidding on is the semi-desirable add-on. 

Lastly

Above all else, don’t get stressed. The increment you’re trying to shave off the price will probably not add up to much for you, but can make quite a difference to the seller. Have some fun, but don’t get mad chasing a price that may be a bad deal for the seller. The idea is for the dance to finish with both tango-ers feeling satisfied with the transaction.
